It was confirmed to be a failed russian rocket launch. The russians didn't admit it until some time after (russian pride *rolleyes*), but they didn't manage to hide the facts indefinitely. The rocket was launched from a submarine, if my memory serves me right. The spirals were created from the damaged rocket spinning around as it propelled through the skies. No UFO, no astronomical phenomenon.
